Cacao returns to Springfield for Dia de Los Muertos - third year running.
This year I’m bringing something specific: the drinking chocolate traditions of New Mexico, where cacao and remembrance have long shared a table. Ofrendas call for offerings such as marigolds, copal, photographs, and often, cacao itself. It was currency, medicine, and a gift long before it was a dessert.
Expect a hands-on tasting rooted in that history with real material culture behind it such as molinillos, mancerinas, and the recipes that carried cacao from Mesoamerica north into what’s now the American Southwest.
Three years in, this has become one of my favorite nights of the year in Springfield. Come sit with the ancestors, and with the chocolate that’s honored them for centuries.

The Indigenous Story of Cacao
Years of research into cacao’s material culture led me to a question that I wouldn’t let go. Where were the indigenous voices in the story chocolate tells about itself? The indigenous story of cacao is the answer. A pop-up chocolate museum opening in Nashville in collaboration with Indigenash tracing cacao from its origins through the hands that have shaped it for millennia. This musuem has been decades in the making and worth the wait. Opening soon.
