One of my favorite pleasures in life is to gather with friends. Two weeks ago, Erin Fraser and I started the first Chocolate Tasting Club in Nashville that we are calling The Chocolate Speakeasy.  Mara Papatheodorou, former editor of Bon Apetit, our resident Taste & Traditions expert revealed her love of smooth chocolate over grainy. Renee French, owner of Practical Massage and Ayurvedic trained, not surprisingly loved Lauren Heinick’s  Wknd Chocolate Turmeric Goat Milk Bar while Sarah Voter, who is about to open specialty market Sassafrass, was eyeing a few bars for her market.

But it was Erin’s background as a natural perfumer that added a specialness to the day. She gave us a perfumer’s trick on how to smell chocolate. It translated so well that I am adding this to my future chocolate tastings! Instead of taking a short sniff of chocolate, she suggested a series of small sniffs. We oohed and awed over the amount of notes in the chocolate that came forth. This is so much fun and the perfect way to connect with old friends and new! Our next tasting will be at the beginning of May in a yet to be disclosed location but I’ll keep you posted.
